Canberra, plain and buildings both. A dry grass plain under a low grey sky, trees and a wire fence on a bare slope, a plaza of red and grey paving under cloud, a tripod standing at the long curved wall. Then indoors: a hall of timber benches curved round a red carpet, a foyer floored in black-and-white stone, a skylit room where the floor repeats the ceiling, marble stairs seen close, a sculpture lit in a dark gallery. Outside, the weather does the work. Inside, it is the light.
