Chongqing stacked in levels. A stone stair climbing between two rails under a curved flyover, an open-air escalator under a concrete canopy, a blue glass curtain wall holding the sky, a monorail running its elevated track along a hillside, a packed terrace caught between green walls above a red bench, a tunnel bored through the hill, lamp by lamp, to a stair at the far end. Hardly a street in sight, which is the point of the place.
重庆是一层层叠起来的。弧形高架下的石阶夹在两道栏杆之间，露天扶梯顶着混凝土雨棚，蓝玻璃幕墙收着一片天光，轻轨贴着山坡驶过高架，绿墙之间露出一层坐满人的平台，还有一条从山里凿过去的隧道，灯一盏接一盏，尽头是台阶。几乎看不到街面——这大概就是这座城市的意思。
