Gannan, wet and high. A green lake with one red boat on it, a white yak standing with a rope trailing from its head, a canopy of prayer flags seen from underneath, sheep spread thin across a grey plain, a river coming over a stone lip in one broad sheet, a hillside ploughed in contour lines below a snow peak. Further east it turns to grass: a park sign tilted up with a snarling wolf printed on it and animals grazing behind the board, a brown cow in a meadow of white wildflowers below a misted ridge, a dirt track climbing an empty green valley toward the range. Rain was never far off. The newest frames here are an evening at Awancang, and they are the only part of this that was not rained on. The hills are ochre and bare with a storm coming over them, the road crosses a plain that has nothing on it at all, and by the last frame the light has gone blue. What that frame has in it is a town sitting between two things that have nothing to do with each other: a great prayer wheel on its white-walled platform at one end, a steel lattice mast at the other, the monastery roofs in between. I did not arrange the pairing. It was what was there.
甘南，雨多，海拔也高。绿湖上只有一条红船；白牦牛站着，绳子从鼻子上垂下来；从下往上看摊开的经幡；灰草甸上稀稀落落的羊群；河水漫过一道石坎，整片地落下来；雪峰下一坡顺着等高线犁出的田垄。再往东就变成草：一块歪着的警示牌，上面印着龇牙的狼，牌后头有牲口低头吃草；棕色牛站在开满白花的草甸里，身后是起了雾的山脊；一条土路爬上空荡荡的绿山谷，朝着远处的山去。雨一直在附近。 这里最新的几张是阿万仓的一个傍晚，也是这一组里唯一没淋到雨的部分。山是赭色的、光秃秃的，一场雨正从山那边压过来；路穿过一片什么都没有的平原；到最末一张，光已经蓝了。那一张里有的是一个镇子夹在两样互不相干的东西中间——一头是白墙台座上的大转经筒，另一头是钢格构铁塔，中间是寺院的屋顶。这个对照不是我摆出来的，那儿就是那样。
