Jiangsu out of season. A white wall carrying a pierced lattice screen, a tree in silhouette on a bright sky, a road marked with a single white line and scattered yellow leaves, one orange kite above a wide grey water, a pair of contrails crossing over the towers. Then the lanes at dusk: a white alley narrowing to a lit doorway with a road crew standing small in the gap, a bare tree holding its rust-red leaves over a white gable, an oil-paper parasol seen from underneath between window bars, a white dog leaning out of a teahouse window under a pink neon sign. Bare branches everywhere: everything here is either shedding or already bare.
江苏，淡季。白墙上一扇镂空的花窗；一棵树剪影在亮天上；一条路只画一道白线，撒着黄叶；一只橙色的风筝停在一片灰水上方；两道航迹在楼顶交叉。然后是黄昏的巷子：白墙的巷子越走越窄，尽头亮着一扇门，修路的工人在那道光里站着，很小；光秃的树举着一头锈红的叶子，压在白山墙上；隔着窗棂从下往上看一把油纸伞；一只白狗从茶馆的窗里探出身子，头顶是粉色的霓虹招牌。到处是光秃的枝子——这里的东西不是在落，就是已经落完了。
