Two provinces, and the weather in charge of both. Yunnan, going slowly round one lake: a dark ridge of hills under a bank of cloud, a small boat out on the grey water, pigeons scattered across paving slabs, water lilies packed flat and dimpled with rain, a waterfall spreading thin over a green rock, an orange cat asleep on a sofa back. Kunming, after rain: tram rails running straight down a flooded alley with bougainvillea over the walls, a black power line and a pole against a sky with nothing in it but the dark eave of a roof, a pale brick arch holding a black lattice door, a crate of cabbages under a handwritten sign reading 0.9 yuan a kilo. Guiyang, up the hill: a white-and-blue lattice window set in dark carved wood, yellow pedal boats scattered over a green lake under cumulus, a waymark post almost swallowed by leaves, a macaque hunched on a pink running track, and the underside of an expressway - a blank concrete ceiling on one round column - with the traffic queued beneath it. What I photographed most was water arriving.
两个省，天气对两边都说了算。云南，绕着一个湖慢慢走：云底下一条深色的山脊；灰水上一条小船；鸽子散在石板地上；睡莲挤成一片，被雨点压出小坑；一条瀑布在绿石头上摊薄了；一只橘猫睡在沙发背上。昆明，雨后：有轨电车的钢轨笔直地穿过一条积水的巷子，墙上压着三角梅；一根电杆和一条黑线，天是空的，只有一角深色的屋檐；浅色的砖拱里嵌着一扇黑色的花格门；一筐大白菜上面贴着手写的牌子——0.9 元／公斤。贵阳，往山上走：深色木框里一扇蓝白花格窗；黄踏板船散在绿色的湖面上，头顶是积云；一块指路牌几乎被叶子吞掉；一只猕猴蹲在粉色的跑道上；高架桥底下——一整片空白的混凝土顶板压在一根圆柱上——车在下面排队。拍得最多的，是水到来的样子。
