Sydney from underneath. Surf working a sandstone ledge, an ibis crossing a sunlit square, the harbour bridge a grid of black steel with the last light coming through it, a sandstone block and its chimney pinned under the deck, a floodlit oval at night, wet paving and a row of globe lamps. Then the rooms: paintings hung to the cornice, parquet underfoot, a dome overhead, a corridor lined with black slabs. The city is all here. It is never whole.
