Tashkent, monumental and mostly empty. A slab of a building that is nothing but identical windows, a columned corridor with one figure walking away, a station platform under a white barrel vault hung with ring lights, a gable of pierced concrete, a mosaic sunburst on a wall, a book stall after dark. The scale is the subject. At the airport it is the only subject: one wide grey apron with a single white van crossing it, the terminal a long low bar of windows, the control tower off to the right under a sky of nothing but cloud.
塔什干，巨大，而且几乎是空的。一整片楼只有一模一样的窗户；柱廊里一个人走远；站台上一道白色的筒拱，挂着一圈一圈的灯；一面镂空混凝土的山墙；墙上一个马赛克的太阳；天黑后一个书摊。尺度本身就是主题。到了机场，尺度是唯一的主题：一大片灰色的停机坪，只有一辆白面包车在上面走；航站楼是长长一条低矮的窗；塔台立在右边，天上除了云什么也没有。
